The QARNNS Archive

The QARNNS archive is collection of articles, photographs and items of memorabilia chronicling the history of the Naval Nursing Service and it was launched over 20 years ago by former Matron-in-Chief, Miss Pat Gould. On the closure of The Royal Hospital Haslar, the collection was transferred to the Institute of Naval Medicine together with the RNMS historic book collection and artefacts. Over the years, the QARNNS Archive has grown and we now have a comprehensive record of the Naval Nursing Service since its inception in 1884. This record has only been made possible by the support of retired and serving QARNNS who have provided much of the information and items held in the Archive. We have also undertaken oral archive recordings of QARNNS personnel for the National Museum of the Royal Navy oral history collection. We also provide access to the Archive for historians, researchers and authors. There is currently a team of four retired QARNNS officers who voluntarily give their time to maintain the Archive. Sadly since the closure of naval hospitals, support for the archive by in service QARNNS has diminished. We have very little information about your life in QARNNS! We are aware that there is a great deal happening in the Service and would very much like to hear from you – without your contributions to the Archive we will have no record for the future of your lives and the wide range of activities you undertake. We would be very pleased if you would send us information about your work, courses undertaken, official events, sports etc. In fact, anything about your life in QARNNS. If you are able to supply photographs we would be grateful. If you could please annotate them with the date, occasion, venue and names of people pictured, all items would be very welcomed. The Archive belongs to us all, both serving and retired. If we can help you with any information from the Archive please also make contact. Visitors to the Archive are always very welcome (by prior arrangement). You can support your QARNNS Archive by sending your contributions to: QARNNS ARCHIVE, INSTITUTE OF NAVAL MEDICINE, CRESCENT ROAD, ALVERSTOKE. GOSPORT HANTS PO12 2DL or email [email protected]
