QARNNS Rosebowl Tennis 2007

The annual QARNNS Rosebowl event is a long established Lawn Tennis Competition open to all serving QARNNS personnel. Originally just a ladies singles competition, it now includes Men’s singles, Mixed Doubles and Ladies Doubles. For the first time this year it also included a Men’s doubles competition.

Usually held in summer at the grass courts of HMS Temeraire over 2 days, inclement weather of recent years has meant the finals have been held at the indoor facilities of the Portsmouth Tennis Centre at Burnaby Road. Again that was the venue for this years competition which although dry this year, the courts were still suffering from an exceptionally wet last month. Only 10 QARNNS personnel of various ranks and rates, and from different establishments attended this years event, with operational commitments.


The qualifying games were played on Tuesday 10^th July with the finals being played out on Wednesday 11^th. A good crowd came to watch including Capt Gibbon (Matron-in-Chief), Cdr Judy Onions and Cdr Barbara Smith amongst others including a very good contingent of ex-QARNNS. Lt Jan Ouvry and NN SarahKing fought out the main event of the ladies singles.


Lt Jan Ouvry, the organisor of the event, came out the winner in straight sets (6:1, 6:0) to finally win the title after many years of trying.

Lt Matt Wesson (pictured below) beat LNN Jason Taylor to clinch the Men’s singles title for the second time. Although this was done in straight sets (6:4, 6:3, 6:3) it was a fiercely fought final which produced some good tennis from both players.



The Mixed Doubles final was between Lt Thomas Wardley and NN Sarah King and CPONN Sharon Cornhill and LNN Rui Faustino-Alves. Sarah and Tom (both pictured below) were the victors in two sets, 6:2, 6:1.



Finally, the ladies doubles was won this year by LNN Jenny Aplin and NN Sharon Jones (both pictured below) who defeated CPONN Sharon Cornhill and PONN Claire Styles (6:3, 6:3, 6:3).
