Operating Theatre Nursing
The QARNNS Operating Theatre cadre provides the highest possible standard of surgical support to entitled personnel in a variety of environments preparing their personnel by training within a variety of operating theatre roles including the three core disciplines of peri-operative practice; anaesthetics, scrub and recovery.
On joining or on completion of Operating Theatre Specialist Nursing courses you will be employed in Defence Medical Group (DMG) clinical units based in Plymouth, Portsmouth or at the Royal Centre of Defence Medicine based in Birmingham.
Theatre nurses can expect to be employed in a broad range of sub spec operating theatres, ensuring they develop the appropriate skill sets to deliver care in the deployed environment. Work is ongoing to develop additional career pathways in advanced practice within the theatre specialty, including surgical care practitioner, advanced scrub practitioner and anaesthetic assistant. Opportunities to expand into CSSD management are also being explored. Any career development will be aligned with the operating capability requirements.
Operationally you will be deployed on either the Primary Casualty Receiving Facility (PCRF) on RFA Argus, Role 2 Afloat (R2A) on a number of different platforms or with the Commando Surgical Forward Group (CSFG) deploying in support of the Royal Marine Commandos.
